Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently shared insights into his fitness routine, emphasizing the role of regular fasting in his lifestyle.

“In India, religious traditions are deeply integrated into daily life. Our Supreme Court has beautifully interpreted Hinduism, stating that it is not merely about rituals or worship methods but a philosophy that guides one’s way of life. Our scriptures extensively discuss the body, soul, mind, and humanity, providing structured systems, one of which is fasting. However, fasting is not just about abstaining from food—it is a scientific process that cultivates discipline. During fasting, the senses become highly sensitive, even to the point of detecting the scent of water. It also sharpens the mind and enhances the thought process,” Modi explained during a recent episode of the Lex Fridman Podcast.

Unlike many, fasting does not slow him down, Modi, 74, stated. “I maintain my usual workload, sometimes even increasing it. It’s remarkable how my thoughts flow effortlessly when I express them. For me, fasting is both an act of devotion and a practice of self-discipline.”

Before beginning a fast, he drinks plenty of water to detoxify and prepare his body.

PM Modi also highlighted the ancient Indian tradition of Chaturmas, a fasting practice followed during the monsoon season when digestion naturally slows. From mid-June until after Diwali in November, he follows this tradition by consuming only one meal within 24 hours.

He further elaborated on his fasting routine during Navratri, a festival dedicated to devotion and spiritual discipline. “During the nine-day Navratri festival, which usually falls in September or October, I completely abstain from food and drink only hot water,” Modi said. He added that drinking hot water has been part of his daily routine for years, a habit that developed naturally over time.

Another Navratri, called Chaitra Navratri, occurs in March or April, and this year, it is expected to begin around March 31. During this fast, Modi consumes only one type of fruit once a day for all nine days. “For instance, if I choose papaya, that is the only thing I will eat for the entire duration,” he shared.

Throughout the year, Modi observes multiple fasts, a practice that has been an integral part of his life for 50 to 55 years.
